Length of Maid of Honor speech/toast and ideas?

July 13, 2010

How long should my speech be? My friend’s getting married in 2 weeks (I wasn’t originally the MOH, but she ended up bowing out due to medical reasons, so I’m now charged with that role). And am I supposed to do a speech at both the rehersal dinner and wedding? Pointers on what to talk about? I’ve never even attended a wedding before!

Keep your speech to 3-5 minutes. It’s more than enough time to say a lot, and it will go by quicker than you expect.

For a wedding speech, draw something from the past, the present and for the future. An amusing or personal story (that’s not embarrassing for the bride or groom) is always fitting. Also, talk about what you invision for the couple in the next few years.

Don’t wing it! Be prepared and know what you’re going to say. Inexperienced speakers who talk "off the cuff" usually talk too long and/or put a foot in their mouth. What’s worse: It’s all caught on videotape and playback!!

DO NOT READ YOUR SPEECH. Use an index card to jot down a few key words or phrases. It will also make you look more confident and well prepared.

Practice speaking slowly and with pauses. Your adrenalin will naturally make you want to speak faster, but by speaking slowly you will give yourself time to collect your thoughts, and you will give your audience time to digest what you’re saying.

Make eye contact with the newlyweds and/or your audience. By doing so, you personalize your speech and draw people’s attention to you.

BE UPBEAT AND HAVE FUN! People will remember your energy, passion and sincerity more than your content.

Congratulations on such an honor. You’ll do well!
