The maid of honors duties are completely dependant on what the bride expects of her. Every bride is different. Some expect the MOH to do everything, some are very reasonable and some expect nothing. When I got married all my MOH had to do was show up. I didnt expect her to do anything else as its my wedding and so I feel the planning and tasks to be done should be up to me to do. She would have been more then willing to help out though...no doubt about that. he best thing a MOH can do is ask the bride what she needs help with and get the duties set out as early as possible so nothing sneaks up on your later.
References :
Nothing really... mostly help out where the bride asks and stand up at the wedding.

Some brides want the MOH to be a bridal consultant while others just want someone to look pretty at the wedding. Ask the bride and groom what they expect of you!
References :
Talk to the bride, some cultures have the maid of honour doing real work. If she comes from one of those, and you're just working on the assumption that having the right dress and showing up for the rehearsal and the wedding is enough then she'll get upset.

If she does have more expectations, she will be the only one who can tell you what they are. Some people dump the work of having to pick the dresses on the maid of honour, some will insist that the maid of honour throw a hen shower and/or bachelorette.

The bride might be expecting a hen shower, but is unlikely to tell you straight out if she is, because it's often considered rude to ask for a shower. Make sure to check that one with her.
References :
The Maid/Matron of Honor is typically the bride's "right hand woman" in the planning of the wedding. She traditionally accompanies the bride to dress shopping (bridal and bridesmaids), food tasting, and venue selection. She can also assist in shopping for odds and ends needed for the wedding (accessories to dress up bouquets, for example). She is also in charge of arranging a bridal shower/or bachelorette party.

The day of the wedding, she assists the bride in getting ready for the big day and transporting her to the wedding.

At the wedding, the MOH holds the groom's ring, adjusts the bride's train and veil after the processional, and hold her bouquet after the processional. Directly following the ceremony, the MOH is usually one of the two witnesses required to sign the marriage license. At the reception, she walks in with the Best Man (whether or not they stick together is completely optional, though!) and may make a toast or short speech.

Something the bride may ask the MOH to do in the days following the ceremony are:
-Collect the bride's dress and other wedding belongings from the hotel after the bride and groom have left for their honeymoon
-Drop the bride's dress at a dry cleaner's to be pressed, and then a bridal store for storing in a memento box (if the bride chooses to do so)
References :
"The Bridesmaid's Handbook" by Kathy Passero, Greg Stadler

Maid of Honot typically is supposed to aide in planning the wedding and also is expected to throw the bridal shower and/or bachelorette party. Help with the wedding may be as simple as making favors or calling about halls and rentals. Just making the bride's life a bit easier. Good luck!
References :
Fired as Maid of Honor once.

Really the only thing a maid of honor needs to do is wear the dress, show up on time, and be there to support the bride. But now a days a maid of honor typically does that plus plan a bridal shower and a bachelorette party. She's there to help the bride with anything she needs.
References :
Keep it simple, short and sweet. Just say a few kind words. Tell your aunt how happy you are for her and welcome her groom into the family. Then simply wish them the best.
